NCJW Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY)

Working with the Orleans Parish School Board, the local chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women launched HIPPY in 1987. The program hired mothers who could act as tutors. NCJW provided materials and training to help them enhance the education of their young children in their own homes.

Praise for the program was both local and national. The New Orleans press ran numerous articles picturing mothers and children. Journalist Nina Darnton, impressed with the achievements of HIPPY in New Orleans, featured the program in the national magazine, Newsweek.
