Florence Weiland Schornstein, b. 1934

Florence Weiland Schornstein rose in the ranks of NCJW from the Public Affairs committee, a learning lab for political activism during the Civil Rights Era, to the presidency. She joined other NCJW women on the Urban League Board and served as director of the New Orleans Parks and Parkway Commission (1982-1997). Under her leadership, the Commission garnered national attention for its management of the city’s green spaces. She was also a founding member of the Committee of 21, formed to encourage more women to run for office and to encourage their appointments to civic boards. See the Social Justice section for her efforts on behalf of Civil Rights.
