Frieda Kaufmann Gelman, 1901-1974
Russian-born Frieda Kaufmann Gelman ran her fabric business from the 1930s to the 1970s as a key stop on Dryades Street in what New Orleanians called the Jewish district, settled and dominated by immigrants from Eastern Europe and Russia. Gelman is representative of the many business women who worked alone or with family to manage commercial enterprises throughout the twentieth century.
