Celia Lubritz Katz, b. 1930

Celia Katz served as president of the New Orleans chapter of NCJW during the height of the Civil Rights Era, 1964-1966. Her name is penned on resolutions and letters that were controversial at the time, including this letter (far right) to Mayor Victor Schiro that demanded the reopening of New Orleans Recreation Department pools closed at that point to avoid desegregation. Also as NCJW President, Katz helped initiate Magic Land, a pre-school program precursor to Head Start. And, after desegregation, Katz oversaw National NCJW Civil Rights and Medicare directives, called Activity Cues, pictured here far right.
